Does anyone know if I can be held liable if I buy a business from an entity who has evaded taxes in the past?

I know this person has not been honest with their tax declarations, as they're a personal friend. Should the IRS find out about their indescretions, could I be held liable for their past actions if the company has changed hands and now belongs to me?
